Walk On Water Analysis By: Jack Sarabia

The average length of a song is usually just over a few minutes. But with the right lyrics, the meaning can make a song feel eternal. An artist who is guilty of doing this on numerous occasions is Eminem. Eminem has many times been called a lyrical genius. He again came up with a masterpiece in the fall of 2017 when he teamed up with Beyoncè for the first song on the album “Revival”.

This was a time in the career of Eminem where many people had many different opinions on who he was and what stage his career was it. He starts by saying that no matter what he comes out with, fans will always find a way to criticize him. This is evident when he says, Knowing that no matter what bars I come with you’re gonna hark, gripe, and that’s a hard Vicodin to swallow. So I scrap these, as pressure increases, like khakis feel the ice cracking.”

Eminem also says that he spent a lot of time questioning himself, and not feeling particularly confident in his abilities when he said “Always in search of the verse I haven’t spit yet, will this step just be another mis step”

As the song comes to a close, Eminem reveals that he does not want to just quit the rap game just because people are hating on when he says “Cause how do I, ever let this mic go without a fight”. This shows that Eminem isn’t going to just give into people’s opinions and just quit. He wants to finish his career on his own terms.

The chorus of the song shows a perfect metaphor for exactly what Eminem is going through. He talks about how people call him “God-like”. He says he is not God-like because the only time he can walk on water (the name of the song), is when it freezes. This part of the song is written and performed by Beyonce and truly depicts how Eminem feels. That is why this was a great duet between 2 of the most famous artist ever.
